Pest Management Technician Licence
Published by: Department of Health / Public Health / Environmental Health Directorate
When is this licence required?

You will require this licence if you intend to work as a pest management technician. A pest management technician is a person who undertakes pest management treatments or fumigations. A pest management treatment is the treatment of any place or thing with pesticides in an attempt to destroy or ward off any animal, plant or other biological entity. Examples of pest management treatments include fumigations and destroying plants.

You will be issued with this licence restricted to particular endorsements depending upon your training. These may include:

  • particular types of pest management treatments
  • pest management sales
  • the use of particular restricted use pesticides.

This licence is also available as a provisional licence. The provisional licence authorises you to own or buy a pest management business. However, you must employ someone who holds a full technician's licence until you obtain your own.

Please note that to undertake pest treatments for fee or reward you not only need this licence but you also need either a pest management business registration, or to be working for a business with that registration.

Aerial spraying, formaldehyde preservation and sterilising surgical products are not pest management treatments and do not require this licence, although these may require a separate approval.

You will not require this licence if you intend to undertake pest management treatments for only one employer and only on premises and things occupied, owned or used by that employer. You will also not require this licence if you intend to only undertake soil fumigations, although this may require a separate approval.

Please consult the Contact Officer for more information.
